Fully Local Compost Service: Our Partnership with Half Moon Farm in Lakewood

Dirt Cheap Compost is proud to be JeffCo's first and only completely local, end-to-end compost pickup service.

Here at Dirt Cheap Compost, we have the flexibility and motivation to do our compost service differently than everyone else in the industry. You see, we're not really a "business" per se. We don't really make a "profit" or "net income" or "cash flow." But these are just technical terms from our accountant; ignore them, like we do.

What we're saying is: Dirt Cheap Compost is simply a passion project to make our local JeffCo community more sustainable, so we can make better choices that may not always be the most profitable.

For example, we began our journey dropping off our customers' food waste at A1 Organics – the largest industrial composter in Colorado, which almost all the other composting pickup services also use because of their generously low drop-off fees. Despite this great affordable option, we continued to look for a more local, environmentally friendly solution that didn't involve so much driving. You see, while we were extremely grateful for A1's partnership and blown away by their incredible operations, there was one unfortunate reality we had to deal with every time we ran our route: the 50-mile back-and-forth drive to Keensburg, CO.

Dropoff at A1 Organics in Keensburg

Not only did this waste a huge amount of energy for the 100-mile round trip, but it also cost us a couple hours of time, limiting our operations and growth potential. So, after emailing many local farmers, we finally found a new partner that was overjoyed to receive our customers' weekly food and garden waste: Half Moon Farm in Lakewood! Eric, the owner there, calls our compost tea "liquid gold"!

Since June, we have been working with the wonderful team at Half Moon Farm. While working with a small farm is somewhat more expensive for DCC vs an industrial composter, we're thrilled that our customers' compost has since become fertilizer for new food, herbs, trees, shrubs, and flowers produced and sold locally right here in Jefferson County.

While we are so appreciative for A1 Organics for giving us our start, we are beyond excited to have strengthened our operation's commitment to our community's sustainability!

And for our growing list of 100+ Dirt Cheap Compost members, especially those in Lakewood: please mention your membership with us when you speak with Eric at Half Moon Farm – you will receive a special discount on anything you buy from the farm!
